PDU is a simple drive unit for rotating and linear drives. The pin gear rack with rollers can be used in both linear reciprocating motion and rotating oscillating motion. PDU has the same function as rack & pinion, but varies in feature and capacity. Unlike chain and sprocket power transmission, PDU employs a single pin gear meshing transmission. |
Q2 | Is the tooth profile of PDU different from that of general sprockets? |

The general chain and sprocket transmission uses JIS grade S-shape or U-shape tooth profile, while PDU pin gear adopts a unique tooth profile. The tooth profile varies by linear and rotating drives. For rotating drives, the tooth profile further varies by outer or inner drive pin wheel. |
Q3 | What's the difference between PDU frame no. and gear modular? |

The gear module is the value of dividing pin wheel pitch circle diameter by the number of teeth. The frame number of PDU is same as the pitch size. The pitch size of PDU020 is 20mm. The larger value, the higher strength. |

Q5 | Can PDU be used in lifting drives? |

PDU employs a unique meshing design, allowing rough mounting precision (center to center distance). Unlike gear rack, the construction of PDU prevents disengagement caused by accumulated foreign substances in the meshing part. Rotating rollers in the pin gear also help to reduce wear-out. |

Pin wheel is light weight and easy handling, thanks to its hollow structure made up of frame, pin and rollers. Wider center-to-center distance makes mounting easy. For oscillation application, the pin wheel with necessary rotation angle can be manufactured to save cost. |

Pin rack and pin wheel are hollow structures made up of flame, pin and rollers, preventing the accumulation of foreign substances. However, dust preventing measure is necessary, as dust is small particle and once clogs roller and pin, it will block roller rolling and cause irregular wear-out. |

The tooth profile of pin gear is specially designed to best match pin rack and pin wheel. Therefore, basically the sales of the product is made in sets. The separate sale of replacement is available, please check the final drawing no. first. The separate sale of pin gear, pin rack and pin wheel is available if users agree on the condition that only the shape and dimension are under the warranty.(The performance is unwarranted.) Q12 | Are frame numbers other than those selected fit for use? |

It's usable if the size is above the selected frame no. It's necessary to check the balance between mechanical devices. Raising up the size may help to reduce the number of components and further cut down the cost. To lower the size, adjusting the less used equipment or double the pin rack are possible solutions, please consult us. |
Q13 | What kind of surface treatment is available? |

The anti-corrosion treatment of steel type includes black coating, nickel coating and our high anti-rust specification. ( PDU030 to PDU120) Stainless type of higher anti-rust performance and less strenghth is also available. |
Q14 | What's the operating environment for high anti-rust specification? |

Outdoors where the strength is required. Also in the environment with seawater or where requires higher anti-rust performance than steel type. Please consult us. |
Q15 | High anti-rust specification of PDU020 and PDU022 are not included in the catalog, are they available? How to confirm it? |

The center-to-center distance is related to the value of backlash. Wider center-to-center distance can be achieved with large backlash pin gear tooth profile. Flexible type which has a wider center-to-center distance tolerance than standard type is also available. |
Q20 | Is it possible to narrow the backlash of PDU? |

The backlash can be reduced up to 2/3 of the standard. (Available with PDU020 to PDU120). Please consult us. Moreover, it's recommended to use the friction type locking device for the connection of shaft and pin gear. |
Q21 | Can you manufacture the roller numbers of pin rack and pin wheel other than those listed in the catalog? |

There is no limit in the length and diameter because of the separable segmented design. |

There is a limit in the frame no. and diameter of one-piece ring pin wheel. The diameter is around Φ800. Both segmented and once-piece ring pin wheel are available. |
Q25 | What are those projections on the rims of pin wheel for? |

The projections are turned and serve as the reference surface for mounting. The projections can be used as the reference surface if a guide is made in the mounting base. |
Q26 | Is there a reference surface in the one-piece ring type pin wheel? |

No projections, but the inner and outer rims are turned and the reference surface is made. |
Q27 | To secure the width direction clearance between pin gear and pin rack or wheel, is it possible to expand the frame inner width? |

Please consider the sizes lined up in flexible type. (Wider center distance and large clearance.) Basically, with the exception of flexible type, the tooth width of pin gear is made smaller instead of increasing the inner width of frame. |
Q28 | To secure the clearance between pin gear tooth width and the inner width of pin rack & wheel, is it possible to narrow the pin gear tooth width? |

Please consider the sizes lined up in flexible type. (Wider center distance and large clearance.) Sizes below PDU040 are not lined up, but it's possible to reduce the tooth width. The limit is 2/3 of standard tooth width. The tangential load will decrease, but changing the materials can control the degree of decrease. Please consult us. |
Q29 | Is it possible to specify the pin gear shaft bore diameter process? |

We can process shaft bore diameter, keyway and tap as requested. Friction locking type is also processable. Please specify each size when requesting quotation. |
Q30 | Is it possible to change pin gear hub diameter and hub length? |

Yes, it's possible. Please specify the required size when requesting quotation. However, in some instances, due to the balance with hub diameter, the specified shaft bore diameter may not be able to meet the strength needed. |
Q31 | Have pin gear teeth been hardened? |

The steel type pin gear teeth have been hardened. The stainless type pin gear teeth can not be hardened. |
Q32 | Is it possible to select or manufacture the number of teeth beyond the range listed in the catalog? |

Flexible Type has wider center-to-center distance tolerance than before and wider gap between pin rack/pin wheel and pin gear. It's ideal for drives like kiln dryer which require high mounting precision and gaps for thermal expansion. |
Q38 | Is it possible to make pin gear only the flexible type? |

If it's flexible type frame number, the combination of flexible type pin gear, pin rack, steel type pin wheel is possible. In this case, the values of tangential load and backlash are those of flexible type. |
Q39 | How to mount pin rack and pin wheel? |

Q40 | Would it be OK to butt join the pin rack and pin wheel of each segment? |

Generally please butt join each part. Pin gear transferring is possible with gaps under 0.2mm. This helps to avoid the conflict between the segments as well as the turn table. |

PDU needs to be lubricated for operation. Before operation, coat all peripheral roller surfaces with extreme pressure grease. Periodical lubrication helps to extend the service life. The pre-coated grease before shipping is not enough. Make sure to perform the lubrication. |
Q42 | We purchased outer drive PDU, can it be used for inner drive? |

No, it cannot. The tooth profile varies by drive method and the pin number of pin wheel. Therefore, the outer drive and inner driver pin wheels are different for exclusive use. |

No, it cannot. The tooth profile varies by drive method and the pin number of pin wheel. Therefore, the outer drive and inner driver pin wheels are different for exclusive use. |
Q44 | When does the PDU need to be replaced? |

When pin gear teeth or pin rack, pin wheel rollers wear. The replacement cycle for pin gear, pin rack and pin wheel is different. Usually, pin gear has already worn when pin rack and pin wheel become lengthened. Then as the complete part of pin rack and pin wheel, rollers wear thin and increase backlash. When rollers wear, pins supporting rollers also wear. The increased backlash may cause insufficient strength, please replace it. |

Backlash will increase first as the amount of wear grows. Please note that for steel type, the worn hardened teeth will accelerate the wear degree. The service life varies by tooth profile specification, please consult us. |

Q48 | For segmented type pin rack and pin wheel, is it possible to replace only one segment? |

Basically, we recommend the replacement of whole segments, though we will consider users' needs in the cases such as stopped production line. There is fear that other segments may have already worn, except that only certain segments have more gear meshing during operation. |
