Applications Cam Clutch - 17. Bucket Elevators 、Inclined conveyor

Application

Back stopping

This mechanism prevents reverse rotation. The cam clutch overruns while the machine is operating, and engages to stop the occasional reverse rotation.

Purpose of Use and Operation Overview

In a one-way transfer system such as bucket elevators or inclined conveyors, when the drive unit stops due to lightning strike or other problem and the transferred objects move in the reverse direction, a certain amount of work is required for recovery. In the worst-case scenario, this may lead to injury or death. The BS cam clutch is attached to the main shaft. While the main shaft rotates in the forward direction (while the objects are transferred from the lower position to the higher position), the clutch overruns. When the motor stops for a problem and the shaft starts the reverse rotation due to the weight of the objects, the BS cam clutch engages immediately to prevent the reverse rotation. Attaching the BS cam clutch to the main shaft is most reliable because it directly stops the shaft from starting the reverse rotation.

When Tsubaki's cam clutches are used

The most reliable position in which to attach the cam clutch for backstopping is the main shaft (A in the left figure). If, however, you want to mount the cam clutch to the intermediate shaft (B) or high speed shaft (C) of the reducer, you can select the MG-R series designed for medium speed overrunning or the BR series for high speed overrunning. Note, however, that when the cam clutch is attached at position B (intermediate shaft of the reducer) or C (high speed shaft of the reducer), there are chains, couplings, and gears between the main shaft and the shaft to which the clutch is attached. If any of these components has a problem, the backstopping attempt of the cam clutch may not work. Consequently, position A in the figure is the most safe backstopping position to attach the cam clutch.

Advantage of using the cam clutch

  • ・The cam clutch automatically engages to prevent reverse rotation.
  • ・Compared with using a ratchet, the system can be made compact and free of noise and tooth chipping.
  • ・Unlike a band brake, it is unnecessary to adjust the braking force.
