An application to alternately repeat the conditions where the inner and outer races of the cam clutch engage to transmit the torque and where they continue spinning around depending on the difference in the rotation speed or rotation direction. The operation is the same as the free wheeling of a car.

Purpose of Use and Operation Overview

Heavy objects are sometimes transferred using the equipment as shown in the figure above. In such equipment, the lengths of the right and left chains may become different due to elongation of the chain. If this difference is great, the speed differs between the right and left chains, and the transferred objects may be stuck on the edge of the conveyor. In this state, only the shorter chain pulls the object. The longer chain can only support the weight and cannot pull the conveyor. The longer conveyor chain is pushed by the transferred objects on the edge of the conveyor, and is bent to create a balance between the right and left chains. Such bending may cause tooth jumping or other problems. To solve such a problem, you can attach a cam clutch to the sprocket. The conveyor chain is driven through the engagement of the cam from the inner race to the outer race of the cam clutch. If the conveyor chain starts bending due to the pushing force of the transferred object and the outer race of the cam clutch needs to rotate faster than the inner race, the clutch overruns. This ensures that the conveyor chains and sprocket continuously engage with the inner race. The cam clutch maintains the balance between the right and left chains, resulting in longer chain life.

Required properties vary such as large capacity, medium capacity, high speed, and low speed. It is important to select the optimum cam for the application and select/design a cam clutch according to the usage conditions.
