Applications Cam Clutch - 1. Floodgate opening/closing system

Application

Overrunning

An application to alternately repeat the conditions where the inner and outer races of the cam clutch engage to transmit the torque and where they continue spinning around depending on the difference in the rotation speed or rotation direction. The operation is the same as the free wheeling of a car.

Purpose of Use and Operation Overview

When the gate (water gate) moves up

The drive from the motor is transmitted via the reducer to rotate the drum and hoist the gate. During this period, the cam clutch overruns to break the link with the water brake or fan brake, which prevents excessive power loss during hoisting.

When the gate (water gate) moves down

When the brake is released, the gate starts going down due to its own weight. During this period, the cam clutch automatically engages to rotate the water brake or fan brake. This limits the gate movement to a specific constant speed. When the gate reaches the river bottom, the reducer shaft stops. The water brake or fan brake, however, continues rotation due to an inertia force. At this point, the cam clutch automatically overruns to prevent damage to the shaft.

Advantage of using the cam clutch

  • ・Engagement and overrun operation can be switched automatically based on the difference in the rotation direction or rotation speed between the inner and outer races, without the need for an extra control device.
