Applications Cam Clutch - 7. Wood crusher

Application

Overrunning

An application to alternately repeat the conditions where the inner and outer races of the cam clutch engage to transmit the torque and where they continue spinning around depending on the difference in the rotation speed or rotation direction. The operation is the same as the free wheeling of a car.

Purpose of Use and Operation Overview

Wood chips are made from cut trees or branches with a wood crusher and used to cover fruit farms, gardens, or pathways. A wood crusher drum is heavy with many cutting teeth. Consequently, a large wood crusher requires a sub motor for starting up. The drive is transmitted from the tractor's engine to the PTO shaft, cam clutch engagement, belt and then drum. When the engine is stopped, the drum cannot stop immediately and continues rotation due to the inertia force. While the drum continues rotation, the cam clutch overruns to release the inertia force. Also, when the sub motor rotates the crush drum, the outer race of the cam clutch overruns to break the link with the PTO shaft. The contact between the wood and cutter generates an impact. The rotation is transmitted from the inner race to the outer race of the cam clutch via the engagement of the cam, and the cam clutch continuously receives that impact during operation. In such a case, it is necessary to consider the life and engagement characteristics of the cam clutch.

When Tsubaki's cam clutches are used ・・・

For usage where impact is applied continuously, you need to determine the specification of the cam clutch based on the life and engagement characteristics of the cam clutch as well as usage conditions such as the overrunning period. We have a wide range of experience in cam clutch applications and can suggest products according to both effectiveness and economy. Contact us if your application exceeds the capacity stated in our catalog.

Advantage of using the cam clutch

  • ・The cam clutch automatically changes from engagement to overrunning based on the difference in the rotation speed.
  • ・No extra switching device is required for the shift from engagement to overrunning.
