An application to alternately repeat the conditions where the inner and outer races of the cam clutch engage to transmit the torque and where they continue spinning around depending on the difference in the rotation speed or rotation direction. The operation is the same as the free wheeling of a car.

Purpose of Use and Operation Overview

Gas engines or gas turbines are used for power generation using city gas or liquefied natural gas. In general, a gas turbine requires a turning operation when it is started and stopped. When the gas turbine starts, the cam clutch engages to transmit the drive from the turning gear motor to the gas turbine and operate the gas turbine at low speed. When the gas turbine starts up, the cam clutch starts overrunning and breaks the link between the gas turbine and turning gear motor. When the gas turbine stops, the turning gear motor starts. At the point when the gas turbine rotation speed decreases to match the speed of the turning gear motors, the cam clutch engages and rotates the gas turbine at low speed again. Gas engines and gas turbines require a turning operation at the beginning and end of their operation in order to eliminate or prevent the distortion of the rotation shaft.

Cam clutches that can be used for both mounting examples shown above can be selected.
In both mounting examples 1 and 2, the cam does not make contact with the inner and outer races during the turbine operation, achieving long life.

In mounting example 1, the cam clutch inner ring overruns at high speed while the turbine is operating, however, the cam lifts off (is released) and does not make contact with the inner and outer races.

In mounting example 2, the cam clutch outer ring overruns at high speed while the turbine is operating, however, the cam lifts off (is released) and does not make contact with the inner and outer races.

Advantage of using the cam clutch

  • ・The cam clutch switches between overrunning and engagement automatically simply based on the difference in the rotation speed.
  • ・Using a cam clutch eliminates the need for an extra control device.
